My Journey with KOD Lyons LLP: A Law Graduate’s Perspective

Picture1

Starting my journey with KOD Lyons LLP in April 2024 has been an incredible experience, one that has broadened my understanding of the law and solidified my aspirations for a career in legal practice. As a law graduate from University College Dublin (UCD), stepping into the dynamic environment of KOD Lyons’ civil department has provided me with invaluable exposure to personal injury and medical negligence cases.

Working in the Civil Department

The civil department at KOD Lyons LLP specialises in cases that have profound impacts on the lives of our clients. From personal injury claims to medical negligence matters, the work is as rewarding as it is challenging. Since joining, I have been involved in every stage of the legal process — from client consultations to settlement negotiations, and even attending court hearings. This hands-on experience has been instrumental in developing my legal acumen and practical skills.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of my role is the variety of cases I have worked on. Each case presents its own unique challenges and opportunities for learning, and I am constantly inspired by the team’s commitment to advocating for justice on behalf of our clients.

Recent Cases

My time at KOD Lyons LLP has already allowed me to contribute meaningfully to several significant cases. For example, I am currently involved in an assisted capacity application, where we are seeking the Court to assign a Decision-Making Representative to a vulnerable person.

Additionally, I have assisted prisoners under the State’s “in-cell sanitation” compensation scheme, a process that highlighted the importance of upholding dignity and human rights within our legal system.

Other cases I have worked on include assaults, road traffic accidents, and delayed diagnoses of ASD.

Balancing Career Development and FE1 Exams

Alongside my role at KOD Lyons LLP, I am pursuing my professional qualifications. I have successfully completed five of the eight FE1 exams and am preparing to sit the remaining three in March 2025. Balancing work and study has been demanding, but the support and encouragement from my colleagues at KOD Lyons LLP have made a significant difference. The practical experience I’ve gained here has also been invaluable in contextualising my academic studies, helping me bridge the gap between theory and practice.

Conclusion

For any students/graduates considering their next steps, I can’t recommend KOD Lyons LLP highly enough. I would recommend keeping an eye on the website for upcoming opportunities. Applications for the summer internship will be opening soon.
